Smaller than Milan Central Railway Station, Cadorna is however another important crossroads in town, especially for daily commuters and tourists from Malpensa Airport.
The square in front of the railway station was designed by architect Gae Aulenti (to whom Milan dedicated the square featuring Unicredit Tower) who wanted a metal red and green covered area with fountains in front of the entrance to the station and a huge sculpture by Claes Oldenburg e Coosje Van Bruggen duo, in the middle of the square.
Such colourful sculpture, called “Needle, Thread and Knot” features the colours of the underground lines present at that time in Milan (red, yellow and green) and is at the same time a tribute to Milan industriousness and fashion world primacy. Besides, the curvy string reminds the Visconti snake, symbol of the city.
